Leave it to the masters at Numero to reissue a soundtrack for a movie that was never even made. The history behind this one is straight out the dustiest vaults of blaxploitation history. In the grand tradition of soundtrack gurus like Isaac or Curtis, little known Chicago vocal group the Final Solution was commissioned in 1975 by the film’s producers to cut a soundtrack for the movie before the script was even finished. However, before it was even mixed, the plug was pulled on both the movie and the music. Luckily arranger and songwriter Carl Wolfolk held on to the tapes for thirty years and now they’ve been properly mastered and given the attention they damn well deserve. While the four-part harmonies call the Temptations or Mr. Mayfield to mind, what sets these sounds apart from soundtracks like Superfly is Wolfolk’s toughened up and tight guitar work. Music for a film that will only live in our imaginations, this is not one to be missed.
